In May 2021, shortly after finishing my GCSEs, Selina offered me a role as a trainee Young Leader for the Taunton Hub. This year, during my gap year, I have worked as an Arts Admin Intern too, as part of SYT’s core team.

Being a part of SYT has improved my skills and knowledge in the arts in ways that aren’t explored within the GCSE or A-Level Drama curriculum. Being a part of SYT has been invaluable in my development. As an autistic person, it was difficult to approach traditional part-time employment during my 6th form education, but being a facilitator, helping out with the Youth Board and many other tasks in the main office has given me a unique opportunity for personal growth that I am truly thankful for.

I have learnt how to work together with young people instead of working with them as someone just telling them what to do and where to be. At SYT, the kids come first and they are given the reins in the creative process. Whilst this can prove to be more difficult as a facilitator, it is a lot more fulfilling for all those involved. I have learnt how each child has their own unique struggles and how there are different ways to support and encourage them. I have also learnt how to use multiple programs (Canva, Trello) which have been brilliant productivity tools, as well as learning to organise and facilitate youth-focused events and how to make a good cup of tea!

Despite having a deep passion for the performing arts, my struggles with my mental health and neurodiversity have made it difficult for me to positively engage socially with others. However, everyone at SYT has made me feel so welcome and I feel valued as an individual as opposed to just a cog in the machine. I am truly grateful for being a part of this amazing company.”
