About Us:
Somerset Youth Theatre (SYT) is a Community Interest Company, working countywide, based in Taunton. At SYT, we use Theatre and the Arts as a vehicle to make positive change for children and young people aged 6-25 years, through exciting and transformative performance making opportunities across 4 strands of work.
We’re proud to be an organisation that works with the child first. Young people’s voices are at the heart of all that we do; they lead decision making, give direction and drive us towards our vision of a world where ALL young people’s voices matter. We work hard to understand and break down barriers to Theatre particularly across Somerset and its unique towns, villages and communities. We provide equal access to the arts through exciting and innovative opportunities for children and young people that grows from, and is shared back to, our communities. We work together to make a difference – platforming the voices of young people and feeding their words, thoughts and ideas into community networks, local councils, education and beyond.
As an organisation, our expertise and skills are vast. We are qualified teachers, SEN specialists, EDI specialists, mental health workers, youth workers, professional producers, performers & performance makers. We are trained in up to date and innovative practices that meet the needs of young people. We are curious and seek to provide relevant and responsive ways of working to meet the complex needs of our communities. We are trained in safeguarding, hold Enhanced DBS, Mental Health First Aid, Food Hygiene, First Aid, Access and inclusion & are proud to be on the pathway towards neuro-affirming and trauma informed practice. We are an Arts Award centre and provide alternative education pathways into the creative industries, as well as paid employment and career development for Somerset based theatre makers and creatives.
We are incredibly proud of the young people we work with and the impact our work has on their lives.
